काठमाडौं-पूर्व सामान्य प्रशासनमन्त्री युवराज कार्कीले १८ वर्षअघि नै हराएका आफ्ना भाइको माया मारिसकेका थिए। उनी जिउँदै होलान् भन्ने त चिताएकासम्म थिएनन्।

एक साताअघि मंसिर २८ गते सामाजिक सञ्जाल फेसबुकमा आएको 'फ्रेन्ड रिक्वेस्ट' (साथी बन्ने आग्रह) उनको निम्ति जिन्दगीकै सबभन्दा ठूलो आश्चर्य बन्यो।

त्यो 'फ्रेन्ड रिक्वेस्ट' आएको थियो, पुण्यराज कार्कीको नामबाट।

'सुरुमा त चिन्नै सकिनँ। यत्तिका वर्षपछि उसको फोटो देखेको थिएँ। अनुहार निकै बदलिएछ। हल्का दारी पलाएको रहेछ। अनुहारमा कताकति चाउरी पनि परेछन्,' कार्कीले भने, 'तर, नाम पनि उही, झट्ट हेर्दा उस्तै–उस्तै लाग्ने। मैले त आफूलाई थाम्नै सकिनँ। हो न हो यो मेरो भाइ नै हो भन्ने लाग्यो।'

युवराजले हतारहतार पुण्यको फेसबुक प्रोफाइल क्लिक गरे। त्यहाँ उनको टेलिफोन नम्बर थियो। भारतको नम्बर रहेछ। उनले आफ्ना भतिजलाई फोन गर्न लगाए। भतिजले नम्बर डायल गरे। उता फोन उठेपछि दुवैको कुराकानी सुरु भयो। पुण्यको वास्तविक परिचय पहिचान गर्न दसतिरबाट प्रश्न सोध्न थालियो।

यता टेलिफोनमा सवालजवाफ चल्दै थियो, उता युवराजको ढुकढुकी बढ्दै थियो। आखिरमा उनको शंका सही साबित भयो। ती व्यक्ति उनै पुण्य रहेछन्, १८ वर्षअघि हराएका उनका भाइ।

निश्चित हुनेबित्तिकै युवराजले आफूलाई थाम्नै सकेनन्। हतारहतार भतिजको हातबाट फोन खोसेर लिए। र, आफैं कुरा गर्न थाले।

'भतिजले यकिन गरिसकेपछि किन–किन म त अडिनै सकिनँ, तुरुन्तै फोन टिपेँ,' उनले भने, 'उसको स्वर पहिलेजस्तो थिएन। भाषा पनि पूरै फेरिएछ। इन्डियनजस्तै बोल्दो रहेछ।'

युवराजको मनमा अनेक प्रश्न सल्बलाइरहेका थिए। तर, १८ वर्षपछि फेला परेका भाइलाई एकै झमटमा सबै चिज सोध्न मन मानेन। चाहेर पनि सोध्न सकेनन्। किनकि, त्यो क्षण यति भावुक बनेको थियो, न उनी केही सोध्न सकिरहेका थिए, न पुण्य केही जवाफ दिन। दाइको आवाज चिन्नेबित्तिकै पुण्य क्वाँक्वाँ रुन थालेछन्। उनको रुवाइको जवाफ युवराजको आँखाबाट अविरल बगिरहेको आँसुले दिइरहेको थियो।

पुण्य २०५२ सालमै घर छाडेर हिँडेका थिए।

उनी श्रीमती र एक वर्षे छोरासँग राजधानीको डल्लुमा बस्थे। त्यहीँ उनको किराना पसल थियो। श्रीमतीसँगको असमझदारीले उनले घरबार छाडेका थिए। उनी पहिले नेपाल प्रहरीमा भर्ती हुन चाहन्थे। तर, कठिन तालिमका कारण टिक्न सकेनन्।

अहिले उनी जैन सोसाइटी अफ इन्डियाले आयोजना गर्ने 'अल इन्डिया टुर'मा काम गर्छन्। लामो समयपछि परिवारको सम्पर्कमा आउँदा पुण्यले निकै खुसी मानेका छन्। तर, उनी अब नेपाल फर्कन चाहँदैनन्।

'अब यतिका वर्षपछि नेपाल फर्किएर नयाँ जीवन सुरु गर्नु मेरो लागि निकै कठिन छ,' ४८ वर्षीय उनले नागरिकसँग टेलिफोनमा भने, 'त्यसैले म फर्कन चाहन्न। अहिले आएर नेपाल फर्कें भने मैले जिरोबाट सुरु गर्नुपर्छ।'

उनी आफैंले पनि दाजुलाई फेसबुकमा 'फ्रेन्ड रिक्वेस्ट' पठाएका होइनन्। दाजु हो भनेर चिनिसकेपछि एकजना साथीले रिक्वेस्ट पठाइदिएको उनले बताए। उनी त परिवारको सम्पर्कमै आउन चाहन्थेनन्। किनकि, दाजुहरूले फेला पार्नेबित्तिकै कुनै हालतमा नेपाल फर्कन कर गर्नेछन् भन्ने उनलाई भलिभाँती थाहा थियो।

'म फेसुबकसँग अभ्यस्त मान्छे पनि होइन, उनै साथीले फेसबुक चलाउन सिकाइरहेका छन्, दाइलाई फ्रेन्ड रिक्वेस्ट पठाएको पनि उनैले हो,' पुण्यले भने, 'त्यत्ति गर्दा परिवारको सम्पर्कमा आइन्छ भन्ने अलिकति पनि लागेको भए म कुनै हालतमा त्यसो गर्न दिने थिइनँ।'

झापाका स्थायी बासिन्दा उनीहरूका पाँच दाजुभाइ छन्। पुण्य सबभन्दा कान्छा हुन्। हराएका पुण्य फेला परेको खबर सबै दाजुकहाँ पुगिसकेको छ। सबैले फोन गरेर कुराकानी गरिसकेका छन्। उनका दुईजना दाजु त अचेल जर्मनीमा बस्छन्। उनीहरूले पुण्यलाई उतैबाट पैसाधरी पठाइदिएछन्।

'म एकदमै भाग्यमानी हुँ, यत्ति धेरै माया गर्ने दाइहरू पाएको छु,' पुण्यले भने, 'म बाआमालाई पनि खुब सम्भि्कन्छु, उहाँहरूबिना इन्डियामा यस्तरी बस्नु मेरो जिन्दगीकै सबभन्दा ठूलो अभाव हो।'

अन्तिम उनले कुरा टुंग्याउँदै भने, 'तर म अब नेपाल फर्कन चाहन्न।'

काठमाडौं—प्रबन्ध निर्देशक नहुँदा नेपाल टेलिकमको नीतिगत तथा पूर्वाधारको काम प्रभावित हुन थालेको छ। टेलिकम दुई महिनाभन्दा बढी समयदेखि उच्च नेतृत्वबिहीन अवस्थामा छ।
प्रबन्ध निर्देशक अमरनाथ सिंहको पदावधि गत असोजमा सकिए पनि नयाँ नियुक्ति नहुँदा कम्पनीको नयाँ निर्णय, नीतिगत विषय र पूर्वाधारमा समस्या देखिन थालेको हो । दूरसञ्चार क्षेत्रमा उच्च प्रतिस्पर्धाबीच टेलिकमले बनाएका नयाँ योजना कार्यान्वयन गर्न नेतृत्व आवश्यक पर्छ ।

सिंह निमित्तको रुपमा अझै टेलिकममा भए पनि उमेरमा विवाद उठेपछि कार्यालय जान छाडेका छन् । निमित्त प्रबन्ध निर्देशक सिंहलाई सञ्चार मन्त्रालयले गत आइतबार पदावधि सकिएको पत्र पठाएको थियो । नागरिकताअनुसार गत असारमा उनको अनिवार्य अवकाशको उमेर ५८ वर्ष पुगेको छ ।

'नेतृत्व नहुँदा टेलिकममा नीतिगत निर्णय हुन सक्दैन,' पूर्व महानिर्देशक चेतप्रसाद भट्टराईले भने, 'टेलिकम क्षेत्रमा चर्को प्रतिस्पर्धा छ, दिनहुँ नयाँ प्रविधि र सेवा प्रदान गर्ने बेला नेतृत्व नै नहुँदा ठूलो घाटा लाग्छ।' उच्च प्रतिस्पर्धा चलिरहेको बेला नयाँनयाँ योजना ल्याएर आक्रामक रुपमा प्रस्तुत हुनुपर्ने बेला लामो समय नेतृत्वबिहीन राख्दा बजार हिस्सा गुमाउँदै गएको टेलिकमलाई झन् समस्या हुने उनले बताए।

टेलिकम सहप्रवक्ता राजेश जोशीले ठूला निर्णय बोर्डबाट र दैनिक काम निमित्त र सिनियर कर्मचारीबाट हुँदै आएको बताए । 'अहिले त्यस्तो ठूलो समस्या त देखिएको छैन, तर नेतृत्व चाँडै चाहिन्छ,' उनले भने।

अहिले नेपाल टेलिकम १० अर्बको परियोजनामार्फत नेटवर्क विस्तारमा लागेको छ । उसले जिएसएम मोबाइलको लागि नेटवर्क विस्तार गर्न लागेको हो। काठमाडौंभित्र नेटवर्क विस्तार गरी गुणस्तर सुधारको काम भर्खर सकेको टेलिकमले उपत्यकाबाहिर पनि सोहीअनुरुप काम गरिरहेको छ। डाटाका लागि इभिडिओ, वाइम्याक्स लगायतलाई प्रभावकारी बनाउन नयाँ योजना बनाएको टेलिकम जिएसएम सेवामा एनसेलभन्दा पछि छ।

सञ्चार मन्त्रालयका सचिव ध्रुवप्रसाद शर्माले नयाँ प्रबन्ध निर्देशक केही समयपछि नियुक्त हुने बताए । 'अहिले नयाँ प्रबन्ध निर्देशकको विषयमा छलफल चलिरहेको छ, केही दिनभित्र नयाँ निर्णय हुन्छ,' उनले भने ।

पूर्वाधारमा जोड दिएको टेलिकममा नयाँ निर्णय गर्न सञ्चालक समितिको बैठक बस्नुपर्ने हुन्छ । निर्णयलाई योजनाबद्ध रुपमा अगाडि बढाउन प्रबन्ध निर्देशक आवश्यक पर्ने भएकाले तत्काल नयाँ नियुक्ति आवश्यक रहेको कर्मचारी बताउँछन् । टेलिकमले गत वर्ष ५ अर्ब १८ करोडको उपकरण आयातका लागि सिफारिस लिएको थियो । गत वर्ष यसले १ करोड जिएसएम मोबाइल लाइन विस्तारको महत्वाकांक्षी योजना ल्याएको थियो । यो वर्ष पनि पूर्वाधार र सेवा विस्तारमा टेलिकमले जोड दिएको छ ।

'पहिलो प्रमाणित उमेरमै अवकाश'

नेपाल टेलिकम सञ्चालक समितिले उमेर हदबन्दीको विषयमा पहिला जुन प्रमाणपत्रका आधारमा ५८ वर्ष पुग्छ त्यसैअनुसार अवकाश दिने निर्णय गरेको छ ।

न्याय तथा कानुन मन्त्रालयको रायमा सञ्चार मन्त्रालयले गत आइतबार पहिला जुन प्रमाणपत्रको उमेर ५८ वर्ष पुग्छ त्यसैलाई आधार बनाउनुपर्ने राय दिएको थियो । सोही पत्रको आधारमा बुधबार बसेको बोर्ड बैठकले निर्णय लिएको हो। 'बैठकले जुन प्रमाणपत्रको आधारमा पहिले ५८ वर्ष पुग्छ त्यही मान्य हुने निर्णय गरेको छ,' सञ्चालक समिति सदस्य सुशील ओझाले नागरिकसँग भने, 'यो निर्णय टेलिकमका सबै कर्मचारीमा लागू हुन्छ ।'

टेलिकमलाई सञ्चार मन्त्रालयले गत आइतबार नेपाल दूरसञ्चार कम्पनी विनियमावलीले 'जुन प्रमाणपत्रका आधारमा पहिले ५८ वर्ष पुग्छ, त्यसैका आधारमा पदावधि सकिने' व्यवस्था रहेको उल्लेख गर्दै पत्र पठाएको थियो।

सञ्चार सचिव ध्रवप्रसाद शर्माको अध्यक्षतामा बसेको बैठकले टेलिकमको केही पुराना सामग्रीलाई लिलामी गर्ने निर्णय गर्दै निर्देशनसमेत दिएको छ ।

बताइए अनुसार सामसुङ एस-५ स्क्यानिङ सेन्सरका साथ लन्च हुँदैछ ।
सामसुङले हाल आई स्क्यानिङ फिचरमा काम गर्दैछ। यसलाई सामसुङ एस-५ मा समावेश गर्ने तयारी गरिएको छ ।
यसअघि आइफोन र एचटिसीले फिंगर प्रिन्ट स्क्यानर भएको स्मार्ट फोन बजारमा ल्याइसकेका छन्। तर आई स्क्यानको प्रविधीमा कसैले काम गरेको छैन ।
के हुन्च आइस्क्यानिङ भएको स्मार्ट फोनमा ?
स्मार्ट फोनमा भएको आई स्क्यानरले प्रयोगकर्ताको आँखाको नानी स्क्यान गर्दछ। यसपछि प्रयोगकर्ता आँखाको अगाडी पर्ने बितिकै फोन अनलक हु्न्छ । प्रयोग कर्ताले आँखा हटाएपछि फोन फेरी लक हुन्छ। स्क्यानरको मद्दतले फोनले आँखाको नानीको प्याट्रन डेटाबेसमा सेभ गरेर राखेको छ।
सामसुङको एस-५ लाई करिन ९० हजार नेपाली रुपयैा पर्ने अनुमान छ। एस-५ २०१३ को फरवरीमा लञ्च हुने बताइएको छ।

युवा पुस्ता मात्र नभएर बालबालिकासमेत इन्टरनेट र फेसबुकजस्ता सामाजिक सञ्जालमार्फत अश्लील तस्वीर र भिडियो डाउनलोड गरी हेर्ने प्रवृत्ति बढेपछि अभिभावकको टाउको दुखाइ विषय बनेको हो ।
सामाजिक सञ्जालको सबैभन्दा बढी प्रयोगकर्ता उच्चमाध्यामिक तहका विद्यार्थी भए पनि त्यसको दुरुपयोग गरी अश्लील र यौन उत्तेजक तस्वीर र भिडियो हेर्नेमा उनीहरु नै अग्रपङ्क्तिमा देखिएका छन् ।
नयाँ प्रविधिको विकाससँगै फैलने विकृति र विसङ्गतिलाई निरुत्साहित गर्न प्रमाणीकरण नियन्त्रण कार्यालयले मुलुकभर विभिन्न जनचेतनामूलक कार्यक्रम गर्दै आएको छ ।
त्यस्ता अश्लील तस्वीर राख्ने, हेर्ने र प्रतिक्रिया दिने कार्य साइवर अपराधका दायराभित्र पर्ने भएकाले सो कार्यालयले जिल्ला जिल्लामा गएर अभिभावक, शिक्षक, गैरसरकारी संस्थाका प्रतिनिधि तथा अन्य सरोकारवालासँग समेत अन्तक्र्रिया गरी जनचेतनाको अभियानलाई तिव्रता दिँदै आएको नियन्त्रक लक्ष्मीप्रसाद यादवले जानकारी दिनुभयो ।
‘फेसबुक र इन्टरनेटको प्रयोग गर्ने नाममा आफ्ना सन्तति कुलतमा त फसेका छैनन्’ भन्ने पाटोलाई अभिभावकले अत्यन्त गम्भीरताका अनुगमन गर्न जरुरी रहेको बताउँदै उहाँले इन्टरनेट हेर्न अभिभावकले बालबालिकालाई सबैको सजिलोसँग पहँुच हुने बैठक कोठालगायतका स्थानको व्यवस्था गर्नुपर्ने आवश्यकता औँल्याउनुभयो ।
सूचना प्रविधिसँगको सजिलो पहुँच, यसको व्यापक बजारीकरण, विश्वव्यापी सञ्जालले समेत जन्माएका यस्ता विकृतिलाई रोक्न विभिन्न मुलुकमा आ–आफनै धर्म, संस्कृति र रहनसहनको पक्षलाई समेत ध्यानमा राखेर साइवर अपराध नियन्त्रणका लागि कानून कार्यान्वयनमा ल्याइएका छन् ।
पछिल्लो समय युवा पुस्तामा मात्र नभई बालबालिकाबाट समेत त्यस्ता वेवसाइटभित्र गएर अश्लील तस्विर र भिडियो हेर्ने गरेका घटनामा वृद्धि भएको जनगुनासा अभिभावकबाट अनौपचारिक तर बाक्लोरुपमा सुनिन थालेको नियन्त्रक यादव स्वीकार्नु हुन्छ ।
छोराछोरीलाई अभिभावकले जथाभावीरुपमा च्याट गराउने र सहजरुपमा इन्टरनेटको पहुँचको लागि पासवर्डको सुविधाबाट टाढै राख्ने तथा विद्यालयले समेत आफ्ना विद्यार्थीको गतिविधिप्रति चनाखो हुन एकदमै जरुरी रहेको आवश्यकता महसूस गरिएको छ ।
दूरदराजको तुलनामा इन्टरनेट र फेसबुकलगायत सामाजिक सञ्जालको सुविधाका कारण सहरमा यो विकृति मौलाउँदै गएकाले नियन्त्रकको कार्यालयले विकृतिलाई रोक्न विद्यालय र विश्वविद्यालयमा समेत जनचेतनालाई अब तीब्र बनाउने सोच राखेको छ ।
पछिल्लो समय साइवर अपराधका घटनामा वृद्धि हुनुका साथै उजुरी दिने सङ्ख्यामा समेत वृद्धि भएको सो कार्यालयद्वारा आज यहाँ आयोजित पत्रकार भेटमा जानकारी दिइयो ।
इन्टरनेट सेवा प्रदायक संस्थालाई समेत त्यस्ता विकृतिजन्य तस्विर र गतिविधि रोक्ने व्यवस्थाका लागि अनुरोध गर्नुपर्ने आवश्यकता आँैल्याइएको छ ।

मंसिर २६ - गुगलले नेपाली भाषाको अनुवाद सुविधा पनि सुरु गरेको छ । तर उसले सुरु गरेको नेपाली अनुवादमा भने धेरै गल्ती देखिएको छ ।
पछिल्लो पटक गुगलले नेपालीसहित ९ वटा भाषा अनुवादको सुविधा थपेको हो । यो सँगै गुगलले अनुवाद गर्ने भाषाको संख्या ८० पुगेको छ ।
थप सुविधा अनुसार ट्रान्सलेट डट गुगल डट कममा गएर नेपाली भाषालाई विभिन्न ७९ वटा भाषामा अनुवाद गर्न सकिन्छ भने अरु ७९ वटा भाषालाई पनि नेपालीमा अनुवाद गर्न सकिन्छ । गुगलमा अनुवाद गर्न मिल्ने भाषा, नेपाली, अंग्रेजी, हिन्दी, उर्दु, चिनियाँ, बंगाली, स्पेनिस, पोर्चुगिजलगायतका छन् ।

KATHMANDU: The Google Translate has started its service in Nepali language as well, a statement posted in the application’s official blog said on Tuesday.

According to the statement, altogether nine new languages have been launched together in Google Translate, a user friendly application that helps non-native speakers by translating parts of the required words or sentences in written. With the new addition of nine languages, the total number of world languages the application deals with has reached 80.

“Today, we’re launching nine new languages that span Africa, Asia, and Oceania and have over 200 million native speakers, collectively,” read the statement.

Apart from Nepali, another language from South Asia that has made into the list is Punjabi. The other languages added are three Nigerian languages -- Hausa, Igbo and Yoruba --, Somali and Zulu, spoken in South Africa. The remaining two languages are Mongolian, official language of Mongolia and Maori, spoken in New Zealand.

अब कुनै प्रयोगकर्ताले फेसबुक मा स्टाटस अपेडटमा नेगेटिभ इमोशनको विकल्प प्रयोग गरेको भए लाइक बटम ‘सिम्पथाइज’ मा परिर्वतन हुनेछ । फेसबुकका एक इन्जिनियरले कम्पनीको एक कार्यक्रममा बताएअनुसार यो बटम उक आन्तरिक परियोजनामा विकशित गरिएको हो ।

यद्यपि यसलाई तत्कालै प्रयोगमा ल्याउने योजना छैन । फेसबुकले कम्प्यासन रिसर्च डेको आयोजना पनि गरेको थियो, जसमा प्रयोगकर्ता र शोधकर्ताको राय समेत मागिएको थियो । जसमा एकले यदि फेसबुक प्रयोगकर्ताले आफ्नो परिवारजनको मृत्युको खबर पोष्ट गरेको छ भने लाइकको विकल्प सही नभएको बताएका थिए ।

Browsing through Facebook you’ll see all sorts of posts from people sharing a song they like, something that annoys them, something good happening to them, and of course, there are plenty of bad things too.

But what exactly do you do when you see a post about bad things?  Do you hit the like button?  Doesn’t that seem a bit weird? For example, what’re you supposed to do when you see a post that goes, “I can’t believe I’m having the worst day of my life!  I’ve been let go from the company, my S.O. left me, and now I’m homeless. When will I get a break?”

You might see responses like, “OMG, I’m so sorry to hear that,” “dude you can crash with me,” or other messages that shows how people sympathize with them. But the one thing that people most definitely shouldn’t do is hit the like button, even if they’re sympathizing, because the author of the post might misconstrue that you’re laughing at their misfortune.

Ever wish Facebook has an “I feel yah bro” button, because sometimes you just don’t know what to say?

It might sound weird but Facebook is apparently considering such a thing, according to a report in Time.

Facebook engineer Dan Muriello stated that Facebook has considered adding a Sympathize button, an experimental feature that was first suggested during a Facebook hackathon.

But how will this feature work if it does go live?

For one, you won’t be seeing a Like and Sympathize button on posts.  If someone selects a negative emotion from Facebook’s list of feelings such as “sad” or “depressed” the Like button will will be relabeled as “Sympathize.”  This will obviously eliminate the awkward situation of liking a very sad post.  You can just sympathize with your friends, rather than try to think of something to say.


Although the Sympathize button is a product of a Facebook hackathon, that doesn’t mean it will never go live. Consider, there are many Facebook features we enjoy today that also began life in hackathons, including the famous ‘Like’ button, Friend suggests, Facebook Chat, and Timeline profile pages.  So Facebook could soon become a very sympathetic place.

Plus, according to a Facebook spokesperson, hackathons are “the foundation for great innovation and thinking about how we can better serve people around the world.”  And even if not all ideas from hackathons are put into play, they “often help us think differently about how we can improve our service,” added the spokesperson.

But does Facebook really need a Sympathize button? It could be argued that it does, especially when so many people share different emotions and circumstances on their profiles.  We’ve all seen people pouring their hearts out on Facebook, only to receive zero comments in reply because people don’t know what to say.  But this could leave people feeling like they’ve been abandoned.

For that reason, a Sympathize button could be a great feature.  But, and this is a big “but”, there is a chance this could backfire and make Facebook a much more dreary place to be. If people receive too much sympathy over every little thing that goes wrong in their lives, we could end up seeing an awful lot more negative posts – and who seriously wants to wake up to everybody else’s depressing news each morning?

Having a ‘Sympathize’ button could obviously have both negative and positive effects, so if it does ever appear, let’s just hope people won’t overuse it.

The advance, by Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC) researchers, has significant potential for ling lung disease, screening drugs, studying human lung development and ultimately, generating lung tissue for transplantation.“Researchers have had relative success in turning human stem cells into heart cells, pancreatic beta cells, intestinal cells, liver cells, and nerve cells, raising all sorts of possibilities for regenerative medicine,” said study leader Hans-Willem Snoeck.

“Now, we are finally able to make lung and airway cells. This is important because lung transplants have a particularly poor prognosis,” said Snoeck, professor of medicine (in microbiology & immunology) and affiliated with the Columbia Center for Translational Immunology and the Columbia Stem Cell Initiative.

“Although any clinical application is still many years away, we can begin thinking about making autologous lung transplants – that is, transplants that use a patient’s own skin cells to generate functional lung tissue,” Snoeck said. The research builds on Snoeck’s 2011 discovery of a set of chemical factors that can turn human embryonic stem (ES) cells or human induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells into anterior foregut endoderm – precursors of lung and airway cells.

In the current study, Snoeck and his colleagues found new factors that can complete the transformation of human ES or iPS cells into functional lung epithelial cells (cells that cover the lung surface). The resultant cells were found to express markers of at least six types of lung and airway epithelial cells, particularly markers of type 2 alveolar epithelial cells.

Type 2 cells are important because they produce surfactant, a substance critical to maintain the lung alveoli, where gas exchange takes place; they also participate in repair of the lung after injury and damage. The findings have implications for the study of a number of lung diseases, including idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), in which type 2 alveolar epithelial cells are thought to play a central role. “No one knows what causes the disease, and there’s no way to treat it,” said Snoeck.

According to sources close to the programme, Facebook plans to pay the top 4 per cent of the first batch of selected users up to $1 per activity during the initial global rollout phase.
The new Advanced Facebookers (AF) feature is being currently tested amongst a small group of users in New Zealand, where Facebook usually carries out its initial trials before rolling them out globally.

Nepal’s telecom companies have been adding 300,000 plus new telephone subscribers each month, and the user base is expected to reach 20 million by March-end, according to the Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA). This will put the country’s tele-density at 75.5 percent out of the total population of 26.49 million. Two years ago, there were 10 million telephone subscribers in Nepal.

The NTA has attributed the rise in tele-density to the popularity of voice service, expansion in network coverage, affordability supported by a reduction in the poverty rate, falling tariff, competition fuelled by innovative business ideas and customer-friendly package services.

“Pre-paid mobile service with free incoming call service is the major reason for the growth in subscription,” said NTA director Ananda Raj Khanal. He added that despite slashed phone charges, telecom companies were making good profits due to the popular packages designed with customer need in mind.

A rapid expansion in mobile service was instrumental in pushing growth in the telecom sector. In 1999 when Nepal Telecom started providing mobile service, the country’s penetration rate was 2 percent. The sector received a boost with the entry of a private company Ncell in 2005.

As of the first five months of the current fiscal year (till mid-December 2012), the two major players in the local market Ncell and Nepal Telecom gained 9.04 million and  8.3 million users respectively.

Among the total subscriber base of 18.7 million, mobile users make up 16.6 million and fixed and limited mobility service users make up 2.1 million.

Mobile penetration reached 20 percent in 2010. “We also expect mobile data to take off because the mobile network offers the fastest and easiest way to access the internet,” said Sanju Koirala, corporate communication director of Ncell. She added that since building mobile communication infrastructure requires sizeable investment, the company was making improvements gradually.

Apart from capacity enhancement, telecom companies have expanded their network coverage in rural areas where telecom service is in greatest need. Small telecom companies -- United Telecom, Smart Telecom, Nepal Satellite Telecom and STM -- are also providing service.

Nepal Telecom has been working to expand mobile service across the country with its 10 million mobile lines and 2 million IP CDMA mobile lines mega project.

“We aim to distribute mobile lines on demand by outsourcing to local companies,” said a senior official. He added that despite huge demand, the company had not been able provide service due to delays in project implementation.

Nepal Telecom’s mega project will make available mobile lines that can provide high speed wireless internet. However, compared to voice service, data service has little demand, but the investment required is high. KATHMANDU, NOV 28 -

Smart Telecom, which is planning to launch nation-wide GSM mobile service, has been embroiled in an ownership dispute.

The dispute surfaced after a group, claiming that it has bought a 54 percent stake in the company, appointed a new chairman. But the founding group says it has not sold any stake and that it has complete ownership in the company.

In a statement on Wednesday, Smart Telecom Chairman Sachin Lal Acharya said the company has neither sold its stake nor has it held its annual general meeting.

Singapore-based Lal Sahu Distribution holds an 80 percent stake in Smart Telecom, while Square Network has 20 percent.

Acharya’s statement came after the media reported that Dipak Timalsina had been appointed new chairman of Smart Telecom through its sixth annual general meeting (AGM). Timalsina, according to the media reports, represented River Road International Limited in the company.

“We have not held an AGM and there is no change in share ownership,” Acharya told the Post, adding a group of people, claiming to have bought a majority stake, on Sunday took over the management forcefully with the help of goons showing fake documents.

Acharya has accused the River Road group of changing the ownership using forged signatures of him and Satish Acharya, the owner of Lal Sahu Distribution. “We’ve found that our signatures have been forged,” said Acharya.

The establishment group have also filed complains of forgery in Police, Lalitpur District Administration Office, the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority, Department of Industry and Company Registrar’s Office.

However, River Road’s Timalsina claimed the change in share structure took place through a legal procedure. River Road claimed all the documents, including the share purchase agreement, “are genuine”. “We bought the 54 percent shares of Smart Telecom at $1 per share,” said Timalsina.

Amid the controversy, Satish Acharya of Lal Sahu Distribution is scheduled to visit Nepal on Thursday. His company, which initially owned a 70 percent stake in Smart Telecom, had bought an additional 10 percent from Israel-based Gilat Network.

The Nepal Telecommuni-cations Authority (NTA) had granted unified licence to the company allowing the operation of multiple telecom services, including GSM mobile, in April this year.

Smart Telecom was gearing up to launch mobile service nationwide from mid-April 2014.

The telecom regulator, NTA, has said it has not received any notification about the change in share structure in Smart Telecom. Generally, investors are required to inform the NTA after the any change in share ownership.
